The privilege of seeking beyond simple survival

To accept within something resembling understanding, to be able to embrace what it means to be fully human is a luxury, and a privilege. Thousands, millions in the world do not have that luxury. Their priorities must be simply survival, their own and that of their children and their kin. War, famine, disease are brutal things. They leave no space for seeking understanding, only for resistance or acceptance, and neither choice with any particular edge within a ruthless Darwinian selection.

And, because we know that this is the case, and must continue to be the case so long as one person wishes to set themself atop another: must those of us who are given the opportunity reject that privilege also?
