Promises, promises

Seems Democracy Watch has been watching as well, and also keeping track. Since the beginning of this election campaign, the leaders of the five major parties have made a total of 1,147 promises:
  • Bloc Qu├ębecois: 255 promises
  • Conservative Party: 242 promises
  • Green Party: 216 promises
  • Liberal Party: 222 promises
  • NDP: 212 promises
Not one of these comes with any kind of guarantee whatsoever.

I had not thought I was the only one asking these questions ... but it is useful to know someone else is taking them seriously. Yet I still wonder how we can possibly force through an honesty-in-politics law, when every single politician hides behind the Elections Act ? (Why wouldn't they? It is scarcely in any single politician's best interest to do otherwise: yet another version of the Prisoner's Dilemma.) Creating a new political party comes to mind: but is this not part of what Reform was supposed to do in the first place?

Is it inherent that, in working within the system, one becomes a complicit part of what one had originally set out to change?
