The happiness of others

So many of the Christmas television commercials deal in either saccharine or shop shop shop. A fair number of them even tease at the edges of encouraging envy in others through the newly acquired material possessions.

This one, however, has a rather curious twist.

It is the return to work in the cubicle farm, the day or the week after the Big Day. He proudly waves the new acquisition: the coffee mug from the local coffee chain. But everyone else also has one: the woman who stops by, the workplace neighbour who is seen only as a hand waving a mug above a cubicle wall. "Ah," he exclaims, "but do any of you guys have this?"

He produces the cash card matching the coffee mug ... and so does everyone else.

Beaming broadly: "Looks like you guys had a good Christmas too!"
